Using Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science to Treat Body Image
- Identify the role of symbolic language in negative self-talk about the body.
- Explain how recent studies in neuroscience contribute to understanding body image.
- Utilize metaphor as a tool for helping clients understand the connection between negative body image, deeper emotions, and underlying thoughts.
This presentation will address how to break the body dissatisfaction spell in persons with eating disorders. This spell, which is cast by a culture, has normalized body dissatisfaction. This presenter will show how to use stories and metaphors to help clients shift their attention away from how they look, to how they see. Recently, modern science has developed technology that gives a glimpse into brain functioning, which allows us to see how these processes work and how they can be effective in generating insights that lead to healing. In this lively and interactive presentation, traditional healing stories, research from the fields of neuroscience and quantum mechanics, and case studies, will be used to demonstrate practical ways of addressing negative body image in a treatment setting.
